Books

Q: How many books can I borrow?
A: The SMU students, faculty or staff can borrow (at most) 25 books. See detai

Q: Where can I return the book?
A: Books may be returned to any SMU library. Reserve books must be returned to the library and couldn't renew.

Q: How can I renew a book?
A: Login My Library and visit the column of Books-renew.

Q: How many times can I renew the library books?
A: Only Postgraduate Students and Staff can renew once. See detail

Q: I have lost my book! How do I report the loss or theft of my library book? What are the charges?
A: You can go to the Library Service desk for reporting and pay the charges. See detail

Q: How do I login to check my loan record?
A: You have to login your library account and see.

Q: I have an overdue book. What are the charges?
A: You have to pay fees which are 0.1 yuan per day starting from the deadline.

Q: How can I get a book that someone else has checked out (request a hold)?
A: Please find the book by using OPAC, then click the link of detail information to visit the page which contians the button of request a hold.

Q: What if SMU Library doesn't have the item I want?
A: You can use Interlibrary Loan service to borrow the item from another library.

Dissertations

Q: Where can I find the SMU postgraduate’s dissertation?
A: You can see the self-built maritime database in the Database column.

Q: Where can I find the postgraduate’s dissertation?
A: You can access the dissertations from some databases such as CNKI, First Search or PQDD.

Journal Proceedings

Q: Where are journals in foreign language available?
A: You can go to the Room A732 on the 7th floor of SMU library

Q: Where are journals in Chinese language available?
A: you can go to the Reading hall on the 2nd floor of SMU library

Q: What is Impact Factor for journals?
A: The Impact Factor is an international evaluating indicator for journals, i.e., the total citation of a paper published in a journal within the previous two years divided by the total number of papers published in a journal within the previous two years. In general, the higher the impact factors are, the greater the academic influence is.

Q: I cannot find the article in SMU library. What should I do?
A: If you know any information of the article such as in which journal or database, you can get the document deliver service for help.

Facilities Use

Q: Where can I make a copy of library materials?
A: Sorry, the copy machine is out of service.

Q: What can I do about wireless problems in the Library?

Q: Who has access to SMU library restricted resources?
A: Current SMU students and staff have access to restricted resources, including off-campus access for most electronic resources. Due to our contractual agreement with the vendors, some of them can't be off-campus accessed.

Q: How can I use Library restricted resources when I'm off campus or traveling?
A: Off-campus access for most electronic resources could be realized by entering your ID and password(Click here). Due to our contractual agreement with the vendors, some of them can't be off-campus accessed.

Q: How do I get a library card?
A: Any member of the SMU may have an ID card which also is library card. If you are not a member of the SMU, please connect circulation department (Tel: +86(0)21-38284938) for assistance.

Q: How can a non-university reader use the resources of the library?
A: Sorry. The library only supplies services for SMU readers.
